Mustafa Kemal Atatürk During the Balkan Wars that took place in 1912-1913, Mustafa Kemal came to the Dardanelles region, and inspected the castles and the fortifications on the Anatolian side. At that time, he also visited the ruins in Troy. During the Dardanelles Campaign that took place a few years later, which can be in some sense seen as a repetition of the Trojan War, he distinguished himself as a commander and made a major contribution to the victory. Despite the insurmountable difficulties faced during the War of Independence in 1919-1922, this spirit of the Dardanelles also brought victory. The aid-de-camp of Mustafa Kemal, İzzettin Çalışlar recounts the following in his memoirs: on August the 30 th 1922 early in the morning, when he brought the map that showed the final results of the attacks to General Mustafa Kemal's tent and explained the situation, Mustafa Kemal, having taken a quick look at the map on the table, jumped up and screamed with passion "Now I have taken Hector's revenge." He whole-heartedly agreed with the connection made between Hector and Mustafa Kemal by the intellectuals of the post-Republic era, that they are both heroes of independence of Anatolia.
The ships of the allies want to pass through the Dardanelles; but they found there Mustafa Kemal and the Turkish soldiers who came from all over Anatolia.
