Why did Homer lose the poetry contest?

Bronze statue of a bard playing the lyre dating to the 7th century BC
The only document we have about this subject has the title "The past and contests of Homer and Hesiod." This document, which is about the competition (which is similar to the competition of poets in Anatolia) of this two poets held in the city Khalkis around Euboea, is dated to the time of Emperor Hadrian, but it is in fact from Alkidamas, who lived around the fourth century BC. According to the story: Amphidamas, the king of Khalkis, dies in war between Khalkis and Eretria, two island rulership. Hesidos won the poetry contest, because he attended to the funeral ceremonies of the king, and told stories about nature and peace, not about war.
If we accept this contest as a historical event, we can assume that Homer and Hesiod lived in the same period. But modern Homer research date Homer's period one or two generations before (namely, around 8. BC) that Hesiod.
What does it mean then, if both lived in different periods, to claim that they made a poetry contest and Hesiod won it, who defends agriculture and peace in his stories?

Like many Homer researchers, Azra Erhat too considers this as a manifestation of class difference, and victory of rural class (Hesiod) over urban class (Homer), and of course over Ionia.
