Who is Homer?

The history of professions occupied with the linguistic and contextual explanation of Homer's epics goes back to ancient times. Alexandria, the research center from the time Alexander the Great, and the libraries of Pergamon helped the expertise on Homer establish as profession since 3rd century BC. But with questions like "who was Homer", "what are the motives creating his epics" was not interested by only experts. The Iliad and Odyssey were read in Greek and Roman schools as compulsory curriculum. In ancient times, anybody who had an education knew something about Homer and his epics.
