The Dörpfeld excavations in 1893-94 played a major role in the understanding of the Trojan citadel. To answer this question is very difficult. Without the excavations of Schliemann we would still search for Homeric Troy, and the discussions would continue whether the settlement in Hisarlık Tepe is indeed Homeric Troy or not. But even without these excavations, the influence of Homer's epics and researches on them wouldn't decrease. The treasures which were stolen by Schliemann would still be buried by many meters of earth. There wouldn't be any chronological problems of Troy. The two Trojan horses in Troy and Çanakkale wouldn't be there. Hundreds of thousands of visitors per year wouldn't visit Hisarlık Tepe (Troy/llion/Wilusa/Tarusia). The surroundings of Troy wouldn't be a Historical National Park, and Troy itself wouldn't be on the World Heritage List.
