Filling process of Trojan plain The questions about the filling process of Trojan plain and how close was the sea to Troy are asked from since 18th century by many researches. Stone, soil and similar alluvium brought by Karamenderes (Skamandros) and Dümrek Rivulet (Simios) from 30 km. east to Troy, can not come off completely to Dardanelles because of strong streams. Because of flood and accumulation of alluvium, as time goes by the plain was filled. In recent researches, Prof. İlhan Kayan (Ege Üniversitesi) showed the 6000 years long filling story in a very detailed work. With regard to these researchers, drillings made (geomorphological researches) on the plain and it is determined that Troy I (3000's B.C.E.) was indeed on the seaside. On the other hand, during the period of Homeric Troy (Troy VI-VII), just as told in the Iliad, Karamenderes River and Dümrek Rivulet were getting together in front of Hisarlık Tepe (Troy) and spilling to Dardanneles. This filling process, which continues in our time too, tried to be controlled with dams or sets, but especially the floods during the winter turning the plain to a swamp.
