Why is the Iliad important?

The Iliad is important in the sense that it tells us the cities of the cultural environment of Mediterranean area from 4,000 years ago with a poetic language. With this importance, the events and the heroes of the epic are covered and reproduced since ancient times. With the help of this cultural reproducing, the epic became one of the main sources of Anatolian and European cultural history. Every historical age contributed to the epic and to the events from their own cultural and artistic point of view, so that a universal cultural memory has established and with the help of this memory people learned from historical events and heroes. With its highly poetic language and narrative style, thousands of years long it has guided to politicians, soldiers, artists and emperors. Xenophon, who lived in 5th century BC, and one of the most important writers of Ancient Greece wrote about the importance of the epic:

"I can read the epics of Homer from memory... As you also know well, Homer covered all of the issues about humanity. Whoever from you wants to be a good governor, speaker or a good soldier like Akhilleus, Nestor or Odysseus, should listen to me. Because I know all of this very well just because of these epics.
