Even in the maps from 1522 the Troy/Ilion is marked, but the exact location is still unknown.
Since the middle of 19th century several scholars has worked at Hisarlık identified with Homer's Troy. There is, however, no irrefutable evidence, written or material, to equate Hisarhk with Homer's Troy. No written evidence has been found at Hisarlık to show the presence of Achaean warriors.

Although the people of Asia Minor were literate since 19th centur BCE, no name of any Trojan grandee has been found at excavations at Troy or at any site said to have been part of the Trojan empire. Nor for that matter no written evidence has been found at Hisarlık that mension the name of Troy. We, in short, do not know what the Bronz Age inhabitants of Hisarlık called themselves and their settlement. Nevertheless, based on topographical studies, the identification of Hisarlık with Homer's Troy is widely accepted.
