In which language was the Iliad written?

12

Papyrus texts found in Egypt, dated 3. century.
The Iliad was transcribed around 730 B.C. in Greek language, but it is not yet known, whether there were written texts from earlier periods, which may be a source for Iliad of Homer. It is almost certain that during the "Dark Ages" (1200-750 BC) in Greek speaking regions there was no writing. But if we go little bit more back in history and question whether around 2.000 BC, when the Trojan War happened, whether the events are transcribed or not, we find ourselves in an interesting situation. We know that the Greeks from that time were using Linear B type writing system. The tablet writings with Linear B language were solved in 1952 and proven by Homer researchers that they are connected with the language used in Iliad. But these texts contain mostly trade information like inventories and cost lists. In one tablet, there is a list of women names coming from "Truiva" (probably Troy). But we see no names mentioned in Trojan War and Iliad. In 2000 BC, on the West Coast of Aegean Sea the Linear B system was used, on the other hand, on the East Coast, a dialect of Hittites, Luwian language was used. In the texts written by Luwian and Hittite language, there is no direct reference to Trojan War, but there some texts with references to the events of Wilusa/Ilios/Triusa and Troy.
