The oldest full copy of Iliad from 10th century, found in Venice.
There is no copy of the Iliad from 2700 years ago, when Homer transcribed it. The main reason for this is that this and similar texts were written on papyrus rolls, on leather or wooden. These materials couldn't reach to our time because of the climate of Aegean and West Anatolian geography. But after Alexander the Great captured Egypt in 323 BC, the tradition copying came to that region and as a result, the Iliad of Homer was copied by Egyptian transcribers to papyrus rolls. Because the climate of this region is humid, some of the mentioned papyrus reached our time. Although there is no full copy of Iliad, we have more than 1500 fragments of it. This great number of fragments show us the enormous influence of Homer in ancient times. The oldest fragments are from 3rd century BC. The oldest full copy of Iliad is
from 10th century.
