Up until 1981, there used to be a small museum-like place in the excavation house that was built by the American excavation team who did some studies there between 1932-1938 in Troy. This old building, which was insufficient in many ways, was closed down due to deterioration and other reasons. When a new archeological museum opened in Çanakkale in 1984, works from troy were moved there.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan opens the Troy Museum on March 18, 2019.

However, a majority of the works unearthed by the previous excavations are in Istanbul Archeological Museum. Especially after the "Priamus' Treasures", which were considered to be lost in Berlin post-World War II, surfaced again in Puskin Museum in Moscow and were put on displace after 1995, Osman Korfmann proposed to build a Museum of Troy near Troy, which aimed to bring together all the pieces from Troy that were then in 44 different countries of the worl. Osman Korfmann started with the principle that these "works should be on display where they were found. In line with this purpose, for the Troy Museum project, which has gone through different stages since 2001, a competition of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism was organized in 2011 and the 1st selected project of Ömer Selçuk Baz started to be carried out in 2014. Troy Museum was opened by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on 18 March 2019.
