Homer researches reach until 3rd century B.C. The center of research from that time is the world largest library in Alexandria. A Homer researcher Zenodotos from Ephesos (325-234 BC) tries to explain the 24 episodes of the Iliad. His student Aristophanes (257-180 BC) and Aristarchos from Semadirek (217-145 BC) expanded the research to philological studies. Even in that time it is widely accepted that the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey is the one and the same person. After a long while, with Franceso Petrarca (1304-1374) the Homer researches began again. After that Homer was widely known across all the Europe.

In 1488 in Florence, Italy, the epics of Homer were published for the first time. In 1788, the oldest manuscript of the Iliad, from the 4th century, was published for the first time. The main figure for Homer research from Europe was Friedrich August Wolf. Wolf laid the foundation of modern Homer research with his book published in 1795. After that date there was a continuous increase in Homer research until our time.
