Professor Osman Korfmann, who directed the Troy excavations from 1988 until his death in 2005, talked about a project the "Peace of Troy" a few years before his death; this project consisted of the following:
- Peace in politics: In the near future, we can organize conferences
and meetings in the historically and mythologically rich Troy. Instead of Geneva, Davos, Brussels, Washington, Camp David, peace meetings can be held in Troy/Çanakkale.
- Peace with nature: This area can be improved in an exemplary
way. The delta of Karamenderes is a very important resting place in terms of the north-south routes of the migrating birds. This area plays the role of a protection zone for various rare and under-protection species of birds. Another goal must be to protect or re-grow the plant species that have existed since the Iliad of Homer. Developing, supporting, and encouraging a naturally based non-intensive agriculture must be a subject of interest to the public.
- Peace of Cultures: In our day, findings from Troy excavations are
spread around in more than forty four musems and collections. Findings that belong to the Troy treasures are in nine different places. If this museum, which is declared to be of international standards by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, is realized, these findings -albeit temporarily-can return to where they were originally found. Here, new, peaceful, and unifying ideas and endeavors can play a big role in terms of overcoming the various problems. The outlines of these three themes, meaning peace in politics, with nature and of cultures, constitute the basis of the idea of the "Peace of Troy".
