In Homeric Troy (Troy VI-VII), there was a wide population in Troy castle and lower city.
Troy I was a small settlement with a population of couple of hundreds. Later, in Troy II period around 2500 B.C.E, big structures and works (treasure findings) show that the city became a center of trade. But the zenith of Troy, the so called Homeric Troy, was the period of Troy VI-VII, when most likely the Trojan War took place. In this time period, city wall were raised, and reinforced with bastions. Parallel to this development, the lower city settlement became bigger with defense trench and defense wall behind the trench. The overall settlement covered an area around 300 000 m2. The architectural area (house, defense wall etc.) was about 77 000 m2. The ancient period population calculations say that there must live I person per 10 m2. According to this calculation, we can say that in Homeric Troy around 7700 people were living. Another population calculation is made according to the agricultural field. 7km agricultural field is 3848 hectares. Net harvest amount from this field is then 400 kg. If we accept 200kg. as a 1 person, then we have a population with 7696 people. To sum up, it is generally accepted that Homeric Troy (Troy VI-VII) was a city with around 7000 people population.
