Who were the trojans?

Vaso painting from 5th century B.C.E portraying the Troy warriors.
It is almost impossible to know where the Trojans came from and who theywere. It is also impossible to determine whether the characters of the Iliad, like Priamos, Hektor, Paris or Hekabe are real persons or not. In the Hittite texts there are some similarities with the names like Aleksandros or Paris, but again it is difficult to reach any conclusion whether they are the persons in question. The settlement in Troy, as the recent excavations show, was first built around 3500 B.C.E. (Prof. Kormann named this layer as Trov 0). Later layers with defensive structures begin with Troy I (3000) B.C.E.) These chain of settlements, go through earthquakes, fires and wars and reach until 500 C.E. In the first period of Troy, when there was not writing regarding the history of culture, it is impossible to determine where the Troyans came from or who really are they. But the archeological remnants, pots and pans and other archeological findings from Troy I untin Troy VII suggest that their cultural character was Anatolian. Recent researchs claim that the two handled pots (depas) found in Troy II, were also found in Eskişehir area but with a date 200 years before Troy. This suggests that these pots came from there to West Anatolia and to Troy.
